Description

A restless sense of boredom causes the narrator to enter his car and drive, simply drive, without purpose or destination. He makes a turn here and there whenever he reaches a crossroad and eventually finds himself deep inside a forest, where the car becomes stuck. It starts snowing and darkness approaches, and he does not know where he is. He abandons the car to seek help while the snow covers his traces and the cold eats its way through his clothes. From the darkness, a white creature appears. He asks who it is, and it replies: “I am who I am.” And the white creature is not the only thing he meets in the forest that evening. Jon Fosse has written this evocative and short novel about the boundary between life and death.
